Laser refractive surgery techniques

Presby-LASIK, Presby-PRK, LASIK and PRK: how they work, and who decides.

Dr Gozlan chooses the technique best suited to your eyes during the preoperative assessment (LASIK, PRK or Presby-LASIK). This page explains how each one works, so that you understand the proposal you will receive.

Who decides on the technique?

Dr Gozlan, after the preoperative assessment. He takes into account the thickness and shape of the cornea, the correction needed, your age, the condition of the eye surface and your activities. He explains the technique he has selected and why. If no laser surgery is suitable for your eyes, he tells you so.

Presby-LASIK

The same procedure as LASIK (femtosecond laser flap, excimer laser reshaping), with a treatment profile that increases depth of field. Usually the dominant eye is set for distance vision and the other slightly for near vision (micro-monovision). Associated myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism is corrected at the same time. A period of adaptation by the brain is usual.

Presby-PRK

The same optical strategy as Presby-LASIK, performed on the surface without a flap, like PRK. It is often selected for thin corneas or certain activities. Recovery is more gradual.

What sets them apart

Presby-LASIK and Presby-PRK rely on the same optical principle. They differ in the access route (flap or surface) and in recovery. For some profiles, especially with early cataract, lens surgery may be more suitable: the assessment makes it possible to judge. Learn more: Presby-LASIK and Presby-PRK compared

Before presbyopia: LASIK and PRK

Before the age of presbyopia, myopia, astigmatism and hyperopia are corrected by LASIK or PRK. These techniques are explained on the site dedicated to myopia: learn more about LASIK and about PRK.

Next: the preoperative assessment and the day of surgery.

This general information does not replace a consultation. Like any surgery, refractive surgery carries risks, which are explained during the consultation.
